Anyone else notice the increase in derogatory terms used toward women in the media? What happened?
I don’t do cable tv garbage, and have kept this stuff away from my kids, but I’m losing the battle. My kids have noticed that on regular network TV and in movies rated PG, that there are many negative terms used toward women. My young son asked me what a "ho" is, and it got me thinking. (He’s too old to believe they were referring to a garden tool). Women started out being insulted with terms such as "sissy" and "tomboy", now it is common to hear "b#%ch" and "ho"on daytime television without a second thought.
When we go to the store and the kids look at video games that are supposed to be for their perspective age groups, it’s there! Video games with the goal of robbing & raping women are making millions and destroying our children.
A friend and I were trying to think of the same terms for men, but there really are none. For example, being labeled a "player" is not a negative term for a male, it seems to be a compliment, yet the term "slut", the equal female term is very negative, and usually unwarranted.
I can’t even line up a family show on the internet in front of my kids because of the t&a all over the ads, I have to pull it up and then call them in to watch. If this type of marketing didn’t work, they wouldn’t be putting it out there, so obviously enough people are accepting this crap.
No, I’m not a conservative, I’m no prude, not going to put forth "religious" reasons, organized religions are also perpetuating this stuff also in their own way. But what gets me is that we all know that kids internalize this stuff and humans learn these attitudes from other humans, yet it’s getting worse! What is going on here? We’re going backwards!
Males – you are being insulted also, ads are appealing to your most primitive instincts of reproduction, they are skipping right past your brains assuming you’re too stupid to notice. Your mothers, sisters, daughters and aunts are being assaulted here – doesn’t this bother you?
All really good answers. – Molly, which came first, the chicken or the egg? Is it in the media this much because we accept it, or do we accept it because its all over the media? Kids and adults are learning these terms from the media, not the other way around. I noticed after that incident with Imus using the term "ho", this term became very popular.
I agree that women can be the worst offenders, my own mother is one. So sad, I’d love to have a reasonable female friend but women can be so competitive. Plus "they" tell me that I look like a woman, but think like a man, whatever that means. I take these types of comments as assuming an attractive woman could not be intelligent, kind of like being called a tomboy!
My best, and only, friend is a male who was brought up in a household of females. He gets this better than most woman I know.
Thanks. I feel better that there is intelligent life out there – don’t feel so alone.
The Increase?…it’s always been like that…it just became a bigger issue when Sarah Palin was announced as John McCain’s Vice President Running Mate…and the media went after her like Sharks to a Bloody Corpse…Women are still considered Minorities in the Eyes of Men (Some Men) hell women were alongside other minorities in 1920 when finally give the right to vote…in America

I think it has a lot to do with the women of our time. There are still some white doves out there, but let’s be honest, the majority of women nowadays have no respect for themselves; they parade themselves around like a piece of you-know-what.
I do agree that the media should lighten their language a bit, but it also has to do with how younger mothers are raising their children, more liberally. All of a sudden it has become okay for kids to watch wrestling and shows like family guy.
So the answer is this:
Society sees nothing wrong with it…they accept it even, therefore the media isn’t afraid of airing it.

ive noticed. a few days ago i was watching this kids movie and it had all sorts of words and suggestive language in it. i hope it changes but what are we going to do? oh yeah and theyre putting in crude and physical humor that shows people getting hurt and kids are learning to laugh at that kind of thing. its wrong and i dont think kids should watch it. on the other hand there are shows specifically for adults which i think are hilarious but kids would not fully understand and it wouldnt be apropriate for them. people should try and protect their kids from what they can for as long as it is apropriate. i can see modern TV from a mothers point of view but as a young adult most of it is funny and appeals to me. i do however notice the derogitory view of women and find it disgusting but keep in mind who the show is directed to. there needs to be some changes or at least some new words that are the equivalent for men and what they are calling women. this is all just my views and opinions.
