Business Networking Question….?
There’s this lecture event tonight by the local engineers society, and I want to go there to ‘network’ in order to improve my marketing skills.
The thing is, I’m considered a junior at work… so do you have any networking tips for me?
also, I’m feeling very tired today, would that influence my networking?
it’s not the first time I go to such events, it’s just the first time I go there for networking.
I’m a pretty shy or quiet guy and I have a tough time initially with such things. Remember that people love to talk to you about themselves. Everyone has a story and if you ask them ‘what they like about their job…or why did they choose this industry…or what they think about this event…or something else like that, they will do the talking.
Why are you going there? Define why – you want to contribute to society? you want to earn more so you can go on vacation with someone? Why? The motivation and definition of this point will help you stay energized.
Also be ready to share your story. "I get excited about this aspect….."
don’t be afraid to show your excitement and the passion. I used to hold back and when I didn’t, things went better.
Anyone can say ‘how about this weather’ or ‘my name is…." but think about those people you’ve met and why you remember them.
Also, think about ways you can help others. Focus on them. If someone has a challenge or something, think about a way to help them, maybe a website or book, and drop them a note the day after. They’ll remember you more.
